Clearing sequence
The following sequence of six photographs show the development of farm land out of forest. (From the Dodd collection in "The Mountain Forests of Gippsland")
1. Cutting timber from the forest. This was only possible if the timber could be removed for sale.
2. Picking up the fallen timber ready for the burn.
3. Some big Mountain Ash were split for fence palings.
4. Dead ring barked trees with paddocks sown with rye, cocksfoot and clover.
5. Stock were introduced and dairying established.
6. A proper homestead was erected of timber with a shingle roof. This replaced the earlier homestead of rougher construction.
