Carl was an American by birth and therefore unable to join the forces until the USA joined the war. His brother Otto was born in Canada and was therefore able to enlist, as he was a British subject. His parents lived in Surrey Hills Melbourne but left Australia and went to Peking as they were born in Germany. The family were involved with the Salvation Army.
He had attended The Cathedral School Lahore India
