Edward was hospitalized a number of times for trench feet. He was killed in action on the 9th of August 1918,
Sergeant Taylor (6353) of Wannon, farmer of Coleraine stated that a shell burst nearby and shrapnel killed him instantly. He was buried where he fell and his rifle placed over his grave for a cross.
Letters to his family after the end of the war state that Edward�s body was exhumed and reinterred in Rosieres Communal Cemetery S.E. of Corbie
He left his estate to his sister Violet Hughes of Dumbalk
