McCartin St

-  South West

Hugh McCartin, born in 1842, embarked on a journey to Australia from County Down in Northern Ireland at the age of 15 in 1857. He, along with his wife Anne Magee, established their residence near Shelbourne, where Hugh became the proprietor of a flour mill. In 1885, the McCartins relocated to Leongatha, emerging as pioneers in the region. The family acquired significant holdings in both land and businesses, prominently featuring McCartin's Hotel among their ventures.

Beyond his entrepreneurial pursuits, Hugh McCartin played a pivotal role in community development. He generously contributed land to various community projects and assumed leadership roles, serving as the President of the Shire of Woorayl, the President of the local branch of the Australian Natives' Association (A.N.A), Director of the local Butter Factory, and Chairman of the Water Works Trust.

While historical records do not definitively specify the year McCartin Street was bestowed with its namesake, the legacy of Hugh McCartin persists as a testament to his enduring impact on the local community and its development.
