He was killed in action at Passchendaele Ridge on 5/10/1917


LOCATION OF GRAVE/MEMORIAL:
He has no known grave and is remembered on the Menin Gate at Ypres

MILITARY/OTHER HISTORY:
◈ He is on the Hallston Honour Roll
◈ 16/6/1915 He enlisted in Melbourne
◈ 29/10/1915 He went to Gallipoli
◈ 10/1/1916 He went to Alexandria and on to Marseilles
◈ 2/9/1916 He was wounded with a gunshot wound to the scalp. He went to the 3rd Casualty Clearing Station and then on to a train to the 26th General Hospital, Etaples
◈ 7/10/1916 He returned to Belgium
◈ 5/10/1917 He was killed in action
◈ There is a letter from his sister Miss E. Cornthwaite of Allenby Lodge, Burwood Rd, Glenferrie
◈ His mother received a letter regarding the medal rules. She wrote back stating Norman's father's address was Mirboo North
◈ His estate was administered by the Curator of Estates of Deceased Persons, 483 Collins St, Melbourne
◈ His father John Cornthwaite received the medals in 1922
◈ His mother gave him permission to enlist, as did his father John Cornthwaite of Mirboo North (signature on page 35 of his file)
